The Missing Goal Posts

The calendar I bought well in advance of the new year got put somewhere (by me) and here it is, almost the end of February and I still haven't found it. There is a blank space where I like to hang a calendar with big squares to scribble on and mark with asterisks in red to remind me of events... no, I don't use digital calendars. Even if I write an entry, it's a case of "out of sight out of mind" for me - I need visuals staring me in the face... not the ones popping up on screen in a bubble-  you have no events today  - because it's much easier to glance at a month of squares and check, for example, which Wednesdays are scheduled for U3a Walkers  & coffee mornings... we do an hour's walk before the coffee and cake..
Today I received a timely reminder about setting goals for the year and tips to achieve them. The 7 goal-setting tips are from my mentor, author Claire Scobie. Go to the following link to read them : https://clairescobie.com/7-great-goal-setting-tips/

My goals have been flopping around lazily in my head, with only one knowing the direction needed to achieve it. That's because a specific travel timeline is involved..  So I think it's time to drag out the old whiteboard and prop it against a wall where I can regularly trip over it..

Some goals don't have an ending, like the garden - to grow more food is the goal but the garden evolves, always a work in progress, planting the potted shrubs, changing my mind, will the sweet potato manage to grow up the piece of wire mesh stuck between the polystyrene box and the colorbond fence.. there are always seasonal goals with the garden so they fluctuate..

I love the advice of Anne Lamott who reminds writers overwhelmed by the enormity of writing (and life) to take it, 'Bird by Bird', the title of her book. It's an expression used by her father, when her brother, as a ten year old was panicking because his big assignment on bird species was due for completion the next day. We know how easy it is to put off something that seems too big to tackle...

My problem is I have too many goals trying to get airborne at the same time, a whole flock of them... so once they're off the ground, I just have to keep checking their direction, still going forward, making sure one hasn't flapped into a tree for a long rest, maybe flying too low and slow, thinking I'll forget about it... or perhaps it's too weak, just a fledgling, not quite ready for a long flight. Maybe every bird has it's own flight path and its landing has to be scheduled accordingly. But first it has to soar! So get to it and do the training I think, the test runs, the re-runs and finally the best possible trajectory to get you there.

Meanwhile the creative me working indoors is busy and feeling satisfied with achieving the first part of a project - transcribing my mother's handwritten account of her childhood memories to add with original photos in a special album. Another completed album is for my parents engagement, marriage and arrival of children. Now I'm working on the life of grandparents - huge! but in May I intend to show the albums to my uncle (the youngest sibling and only one still living).

I loved that Mum, born in 1926, the only girl in the family (three brothers) appeared the dainty girl of the thirties and forties, but so wished she could be a boy and play football. She loved all sports like all the family did. They were exceptionally good golfers, except maybe her elder brother who preferred flying planes and building boats.

Mum played with two girls, sisters who lived over the back fence. They used to pick the bush lemons from the chook pen and eat them (including the skins) dipped in salt. I'm wondering if they later learnt to add tequila..

It's so easy to get side-tracked, even on a short assignment, a simple blog about goal-setting.... and I'm off chasing lemons and salt... I read about Himalayan salt with lemon juice stopping a migraine in its tracks, so next time I'm afflicted with this pain I'll give it a try..but then I read other headlines... salt migraine hoax, salt for migraine myth... should I investigate further or get back to the bird in hand?

So many themes and little tracks to get lost down...bird by bird, bit by bit and one thing leads to another. A lovely reflection on setting goals and having a rich inner life. Keep flying high, I say...eventually a bird lands!
